Did you know that in Israel, Mother’s Day (now renamed Family Day) is celebrated on the date of Henrietta Szold’s yahrzeit, Rosh Hodesh Adar? Though Henrietta was not a biological mother, she was called “Ima” by thousands of rescued children she met on the Mediterranean shore, to whom she provided personalized care, advice and love.
Henrietta had the heart of a social worker even though she had no formal training. When she moved to pre-state Israel, Henrietta headed the social welfare department for the Jewish Agency and organized the program of child rescue called Youth Aliyah. Since 1934, Hadassah has led in the fight to educate and nurture at-risk youth, graduating over 300,000 from eighty lands. Today, the Youth Aliyah villages of Meir Shfeyah, Hadassah Neurim and Ramat Hadassah Szold provide a safety net of services—food, shelter, education and love—for children from Russia, Ukraine, Ethiopia and from abusive and poverty-stricken homes in Israel itself.
Hadassah is more than a hospital. Youth Aliyah is just one initiative, along with other options like Medical Research, Nurses Program and Hadassah Medical Organization that each of us can designate to support as our own Annual Giving choice. In the future, I will be highlighting these other initiatives to spread the word about Annual Giving. Please save the date, October 27, for our Annual Giving Celebration.
Happy Mother’s Day!

From Action to Hope, A Celebration of Annual Giving
Sunday, October 27, 2019
Last year’s Gala, From Passion To Action, was an amazing event!
Thanks again to Ettie Davis for chairing the Gala
And to all the committee members who tirelessly worked to make it a huge success!
There’s no Gala this year, but we do have a wonderful event planned to celebrate everyone who makes the commitment at one of our Annual Giving levels:
Please consider your gift to Hadassah today & plan to join us on October 27th!

Spring has sprung and the ladies of Seattle Hadassah and Hadassah Pacific Northwest have been hard at work, pursuing advocacy efforts at both the state and federal levels. As a result of these efforts, we are happy to share news of TWO BIG ADVOCACY WINS.
Multi-Chapter Participation in Lobby Day
As in years prior, members of Hadassah joined with the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle to participate in Jewish Community Lobby Day. This year, however, members of Seattle Hadassah were joined in Olympia by Tacoma Hadassah President, Barbara Aqua – making Lobby Day a multi-chapter endeavor! Barbara, along with Seattle Hadassah President, Ettie Davis, Immediate Past President, Susan Adler and Fundraising Chair Deni Hirsh, joined representatives from the Federation and members of the broader Jewish community in asking our state legislators to support quality Holocaust education, protect immigrants and refugees, prevent gun violence and support vulnerable families. We are over-the-moon elated to see Hadassah’s participation in Lobby Day grow to a multi-chapter activity and we look forward to building on this success in years to come.
