January 2020

President’s
Message

Imagine if Hadassah member Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg—RBG— were not so busy on the U.S. Supreme Court.  She might be interested in attending our #MeToo program scheduled for Sunday, January 12th in Northeast Seattle.  #MeToo is a hot topic in academic science, engineering, and medicine.  Even before #MeToo, Ginsburg has long been a “fierce champion of justice, gender equality, individual dignity, and inclusivity.”  Read more about  RBG being inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Philadelphia Jewish Museum here.  The #MeToo” movement connects the generations,. Justice Ginsburg would surely encourage you to bring your daughters, granddaughters, nieces and young friends to this program.  It’ll be empowering!

Israel was also involved in issues of gender harassment before #MeToo in 2017, as described in Hadassah Magazine:  “#GamAni, the #MeToo Movement in Israel”  You can open links to other eye-opening articles, “When Rabbis Say #MeToo” and “What’s Changed in the Jewish World After #MeToo?

Continuing with our 2019-2020 empowerment theme, “Thrive:  Be the CEO of Your Life”, we’re planning programs that are of interest to all ages

  • Breast Cancer Survivors’ Stories
  • Women & the Vote on the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment
  • Our Eyes —Ophthalmologist on Issues like Screen Time
  • Our Backs—tips from  an Arab Israeli Spine Fellow from Hadassah Hospital
  • Our Sleep—getting the sleep you need
  • Breaking the Glass Ceiling in the U.S. & Israel—a panel comparing stories.

Save the Date—Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020—Hadassah Gala Fundraiser!

With gratitude for your suggestions and support,

Ettie Davis, President

If I’m Not Safe, No Body Is

Sexual harassment is more prevalent in academic science, engineering, and medicine than any other workplace except for the military.  Dr. Sharona Gordon, professor of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Washington School of Medicine, will discuss her career path and how her experiences lead to her current activities and founding of Below the Waterline, an organization devoted to supporting targets of sexual harassment in academia.

This conversation is appropriate and important for all. College and high-school daughters and granddaughters are most welcome!  Ettie’s granddaughters already asked to be included.
